Gurney Service

AngelTrack supports gurney service, which is non-medical stretcher transport. Only a few states permit or regulate gurney service.

Gurney service requres a van with a stretcher mount, and just a single crew member who is not required to be an EMT. Local regulations may require the crew member to have a CPR card.

Configuring AngelTrack for Gurney Service

Out of the box, AngelTrack does not have gurney service enabled, because most customers do not use it. You must enable it, which requires Administrator privileges.

  1. Login with Administrator privileges.
  2. Visit the Preferences page under Settings and configure all of these:
  3. Visit the Certificate Types List under Supervisor Home and enable the "Gurney Transport" certificate type.
  4. Visit the Employees List under Supervisor Home and issue a "Gurney Transport" certificate to all qualified employees whose current patch level is "Car" or "Wheelchair"... or post an announcement and direct the crews to issue the certificate to themselves. It is not necessary to issue gurney certificates to BLS+ employees, because AngelTrack assumes they are already qualified.
  5. Visit the Vehicles List under Supervisor Home and add your gurney vans, or modify the vehicle types of the gurney vans you have already registered as other vehicle types. A gurney van's patient capacity should be the number of stretchers that it regularly carries onboard -- usually just one.
  6. If gurney service is included in any of your facility contracts, then use the Facilities List under Billing Home to review the facilities' records:

*Only the Principal Employee can modify the retail price schema; administrator privileges are not sufficient. In the Employees List, the principal employee is marked with a ★ star.

Dispatching a Gurney Call

AngelTrack has automatic rules for which shifts can take which calls. Although the dispatcher can override these rules by unticking the ☑ Hide shifts that are not qualified for this type of call checkbox, he or she should understand what qualifies a shift to take a gurney call:

  1. At least one crew member onboard must have a current "Gurney Transport" certificate or BLS+ patch.
  2. At least one crew member onboard must have a current CPR certificate (if AngelTrack has been configured to enforce this requirement).
  3. The vehicle type must be "Gurney van" or "Ambulance".

Other than that, gurney calls are dispatched just like wheelchair calls.

PCR Requirements

The PCR requirements for gurney service are identical to that for wheelchair service:

  1. Leg times (enroute, on-scene, transporting, at destination, back in service)
  2. Odometer readings if transport occurred
  3. One signature on a "receiving facility" or "patient discharge" form (refer to the signature requirements chart for details)
  4. Followup fields (will still be filled out automatically where possible)
  5. Patient first and last name
  6. If call is ☑ Insurable, then:
  7. If call is ☑ Billable to patient, then:
  8. PMHx must be reviewed (crew member must view the PMHx page and click 'Save')
  9. All applicable Custom PCR fields must be answered

Billing for Gurney Transports

Only a few states recognize gurney van service. If you are in one of those states, Medicaid may cover trips in a gurney van.

Of course Medicare will not cover it, even as the secondary insurer. But at least you don't have to bother with PCS forms.

As with all insurance claims, AngelTrack will claim your retail prices against the carrier. Therefore you must review your retail price schema for gurney service before filing any insurance claims. It will be pre-loaded with the same prices as your wheelchair service, so it will almost certainly require modification.


For patient copays, and for trips not covered by insurance, AngelTrack can invoice your gurney services in the usual way. Gurney service appears as a separate service level -- i.e. as a separate page -- in an invoice. They have their own independent price schema, allowing every facility, every affiliate, and every patient to receive a custom rate for gurney service.

As noted above, your gurney price schema has already been created for you, pre-loaded with the prices from your wheelchair price schema. Be sure to review the prices before creating any invoices.

Prior authorizations

AngelTrack attempts to collect a PAN for every gurney call that is ☑ Insurable. Therefore your recent and upcoming gurney calls will appear in the Prior Auth Queue where appropriate. Your dispatchers and billers can upload PANs, or mark calls as "PAN not needed", in the same way as they already do for BLS+ calls.

PCS forms are never required for gurney service, because Medicare never covers it.
